The Young Enterprise Programme - Evex Enterprise 2007
Introduction
The Young Enterprise (YE) Programme was introduced to Malaysian secondary schools in1989 by the American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce to give opportunities to students to learn about business through hands-on experience. Malaysia is the first country in this region to adopt this programme as an extra-curricular activity for secondary school students. Only 25 participants called “Achievers,” are selected from each school to form a mini-company. Over a period of nine months, students will learn how to run a company with the assistance from the Advisors from the sponsor companies. This program is designed to let you learn how to run a business, and to learn proper business procedures. Students will also be given the privilege of operating a real corporate bank account. Young Enterprise student companies often make profits. However, the success of the programme is not judged solely by financial results, but rather in developing teamwork and business skills as a foundation for future achievements.
About the CGL YE team --> Evex Enterprise
After a lapse of four years, a new Young Enterprise company was officially incorporated by 25 fourth-formers of SMK Convent Green Lane on the 14th of February 2007 with the guidance of Puan Cheah Guat Khim and Puan Indra. Our company name, Evex Enterprise is chosen as our company name as it is the combination of our school motto – Ever Excellent. The vision of our company is ‘Commitment Fulfills Dreams’. We aim to be the most flourishing and profitable company in the YE Programme of year 2007.
All participating companies are assigned to produce 3 or more products; so, likewise for Evex, too. Our popular products are the decorative wooden pegs, denim bags, Japanese-style doorbells and bookmarks made from felt. All our products are ideas from the 25 Achievers, all of which are value-for-money products that cater to the needs and trends of our valued customers.
Our general meetings are held on every Wednesday, from 1.30p.m. to 3.30p.m.. The Production line is carried out throughout the whole programme until the date where all production processes of all companies must come to an end.
We has several activities from the start of the YE Programme. We first attended the Young Enterprise Workshop in USM where Achievers of all participating schools attend to learn the basics of how to run a company. Students were teamed up with students from other schools during the event. Each 8-member team resembles a company and all companies must produce a compulsory product – A cardboard photo frame. At the end of the day, all the achievers bagged nothing but fun, experience and a new hope of setting up a prominent company.
The second event of the programme was the Team Building Camp at Agilent Technologies. It was a sunny Saturday morning when all the achievers geared themselves up and head on to Agilent Technologies. We were welcomed by all our sponsors cum corporate advisors. Through this camp, we experienced leadership skills, enhanced our planning and coordinating skills and most importantly, we believed that the bonds between our friends cum colleagues was much stronger.
In June, we started our visits to several schools: Convent Light Street, St. Xavier’s Institution, Penang Free School, Methodist Boys Schol, SMK Sri Mutiara, Convent Datuk Keramat and Chung Hwa Confucian to advertise our products. The sales was satisfactory and our products are fancied by most of the students. We managed to earn a profit exceeding RM 100 from every visit.
The highlight of the YE Programme – YE Sales at Queensbay Mall was on the 21st and 22nd of July. All the participating schools were there to exhibit their 5 months of hard work through selling their own creative products. The CGLians put on their best show for the two days and the results were better than we expected them to be, proving that all the sweat drops and tears we shed were paid off. The Queensbay Mall event was really an eye-opener for us as we learned customer service skills as well as how to market our products.
We, the Evex Enterprise aim at winning an award in the YE Achievement Awards which will be held in the month of November. We would like to thank our teacher advisors, Pn. Cheah and Pn. Indra for their guidance and support, our sponsors from Agilent Technologies under the leadership of Ms. Cheah and also everyone from the CGL family.
P.S.: I would also like to thank those who contributed their ideas during the production of this article.
